Description: This alliance is found in the glaciated midwestern United States. Shrubs 0.5-2 m tall, particularly ~Corylus americana, Cornus$ spp., ~Malus ioensis$, and ~Spiraea tomentosa$, are abundant. Scrubby ~Quercus velutina$ are also common. Herbaceous species are less well known but probably include typical tallgrass prairie species, such as ~Andropogon gerardii, Schizachyrium scoparium$, and ~Sorghastrum nutans$. ^These barrens shrublands occurred on flat to gently rolling sites near prairie vegetation. Soils were typically fine-textured. Fires maintained the shrubby character of the alliance, and in its absence trees will dominate the vegetation.
