Description: This alliance, found in the northern Great Plains, is a sandy shrubland in a prairie matrix. Vegetation cover is high but stands are not extensive. The vegetation is characterized by scattered or sometimes clumped shrubs with graminoids dominating the interstices. ~Betula occidentalis$ is the characteristic shrub, often accompanied by ~Juniperus horizontalis$. ~Calamovilfa longifolia$ is often a dominant in the herbaceous stratum. ~Betula occidentalis$ achieves its maximum abundance on flat sandy soil.
