Name: Pinus edulis - Juniperus osteosperma / Coleogyne ramosissima Woodland
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: This woodland association has been described from terraces, benches, elevated plains and rolling terrain sometimes dissected by bedrock in Grand Canyon National Park in north-central Arizona and likely occurs extensively across the Colorado Plateau from southwestern Colorado to southwestern Utah. Elevation ranges from 1070-1890 m. Sites are flat to moderately steep slopes on all aspects. Substrates are rocky, shallow to relatively deep, sandy-textured soil derived from sandstone, limestone or shale. Stands have an open (>5% cover) tree canopy 3-6 m tall that is codominated by the needle- and scale-leaved evergreen trees Pinus edulis and Juniperus osteosperma. The short-shrub layer has 5-25% cover and is dominated by the deciduous shrub Coleogyne ramosissima sometimes with the evergreen shrub Mortonia sempervirens codominating. Other common shrub species include Glossopetalon spinescens, Cercocarpus montanus, Quercus turbinella, Ephedra viridis, Yucca baccata, Purshia stansburiana, and Agave utahensis. The sparse herbaceous layer is composed of graminoids such as Achnatherum speciosum (= Stipa speciosa), Elymus elymoides, Poa fendleriana, Bouteloua curtipendula and Aristida species with scattered forbs such as Psilostrophe sparsiflora. Scattered cacti are often present, including Opuntia erinacea, Opuntia phaeacantha, Echinocereus triglochidiatus, and Echinocereus engelmannii. The introduced annual grass Bromus rubens is common in some stands. Total vegetation cover ranges from 15-40% and is reasonably uniform except for rock outcrops. The dominance of Coleogyne ramosissima often with Mortonia sempervirens in the short-shrub layer separates this association from other Pinus edulis - Juniperus osteosperma open woodlands. Small treeless thickets are included in this association.
