Reference: Eastern Ecology Working Group of...
Description: This pitch pine lowland community is restricted to the New Jersey Pine Barrens. This association is described as hydric, with a saturated hydrology. The open canopy is dominated by Pinus rigida, with Acer rubrum, Nyssa sylvatica, and Amelanchier arborea being infrequent associates. The shrub layer may be quite dense and is characterized by Vaccinium corymbosum, Leucothoe racemosa, Gaylussacia frondosa, Gaylussacia baccata, Kalmia angustifolia, and Ilex glabra. The herbaceous layer is not well developed. Sphagnum species are common in the bryophyte layer.
