Description: Found only along a few streams on the northwest slope of the Blue Mountains of Oregon and Washington, this riparian forest community usually has <i>Alnus rubra</i> as the sole tree species in a closed canopy. This community types typically lines "V-shaped" valleys with moderate gradient (2-7%) along 5- to 50-foot wide streams between the elevations of 610 to 1070 m (2000-3500 feet). Individual <i>Abies grandis</i> or <i>Pseudotsuga menziesii</i> trees may be seen on long stabilized terraces. The community is floristically characterized as having a tall deciduous layer dominated or containing <i>Physocarpus capitatus</i> and/or <i>Philadelphus lewisii</i> although <i>Cornus sericea</i> or <i>Symphoricarpos albus</i> can be dominant. Characteristic herbaceous species are <i>Maianthemum stellatum, Heracleum maximum, Mitella pentandra, Osmorhiza berteroi</i>, and <i>Angelica arguta</i>, although <i>Petasites frigidus var. palmatus, Tiarella trifoliata var. unifoliata, Carex deweyana</i>, or <i>Cinna latifolia</i> can be dominant.
