Description: As defined, this type is found in the Spokane valley in northeastern Washington and adjacent Idaho, also in pockets in Clearwater and adjacent Snake River Canyon in Idaho. This association includes <i>Pinus ponderosa</i> stands generally on coarse-textured soils with few or no shrubs and an herbaceous layer dominated by <i>Hesperostipa comata, Achnatherum lemmonii, Achnatherum occidentale, Achnatherum thurberianum</i>, or <i>Aristida purpurea var. longiseta</i>. The association is defined primarily by sandy soils and the absence of <i>Festuca idahoensis</i> and/or trace only amounts of <i>Pseudoroegneria spicata</i>.
