Description: This association occurs at high elevations on snowbed sites with a very long-lasting snowpack. In subalpine parklands, the association tends to occur on north-facing slopes. In the alpine zone, above treeline, the association occurs on gentle to moderate slopes with a greater variety of aspects. The vegetation is sparse, less than 25% total cover, and is characterized by the prominence of <i>Saxifraga tolmiei</i>. <i>Luzula piperi</i> is usually present to prominent in the North Cascades but is less frequent at Mount Rainier. <i>Luetkea pectinata, Carex spectabilis, Carex nigricans</i>, or <i>Juncus drummondii</i> are usually present but are less abundant than <i>Saxifraga tolmiei</i> or <i>Luzula piperi</i>.
