Description: This community exists as a savanna with scattered <i>Juniperus occidentalis</i>. The vegetation is dominated by <i>Juniperus occidentalis</i> trees with 3-40% cover. A shrub layer of <i>Purshia tridentata</i> with 6-20% cover is present. The graminoid layer is composed of <i>Festuca idahoensis</i> and <i>Pseudoroegneria spicata</i> with &lt;1-35%, and &lt;1-25% cover, respectively. Stands are found in east-central Oregon at elevations of 915-1510 m (3000-4950 feet) and may also occur in California. Sites occur on all aspects with slopes typically less than 30%, often at or near ridgetops. Soils are coarse sandy loams to loams with a stony character, usually derived from pumice or basalt.
