Name: Populus deltoides / Bromus inermis Ruderal Forest
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This association is currently only described from Mississippi National River and Recreation Area, Minnesota. Additional global information will be added as it becomes available. This woodland community occurs on disturbed upland sites where the dominant tree Populus deltoides colonizes open ground and forms an open to closed woodland canopy. Because these are among the first trees to become established in an area, the canopy can range from short to tall (3-30 m), depending on how old the stand is. Populus deltoides is the most abundant species but other trees may be in the stand in the canopy or subcanopy. These include Acer negundo, Juniperus virginiana, Fraxinus pennsylvanica, and Ulmus americana. The shrub stratum is open and includes Salix humilis var. humilis and young trees. The herbaceous layer is dense and dominated by Bromus inermis and Poa pratensis with small amounts of Equisetum hyemale, Verbascum thapsus, Viola spp., Solidago gigantea, Galium boreale, and Taraxacum officinale. This upland woodland community occurs on disturbed, upland sites with well-drained soils. The plot site where it was sample is a former gravel pit with well-drained silt loam soil and hilly, uneven topography. Litter covers most of the ground surface along with a small amount of bare ground.
