Description:
This <i>Thuja</i>-dominated forest of northern Vermont, New York, southern Ontario, and possibly Wisconsin and Michigan occurs on shallow soils over limestone bedrock. The most prevalent expression of this vegetation is on limestone bedrock bluffs adjacent to Lake Champlain, but it may also occur adjacent to the Great Lakes and on similar settings not associated with lakeshores. Canopy associates include <i>Pinus strobus, Pinus resinosa, Picea glauca, Abies balsamea</i>, and scattered deciduous trees, such as <i>Quercus rubra, Fraxinus americana, Tilia americana, Carya ovata</i>, and <i>Acer saccharum</i>. The shrub layer is of variable cover and may include <i>Lonicera dioica, Rhamnus alnifolia, Shepherdia canadensis, Symphoricarpos albus, Taxus canadensis</i>, and <i>Diervilla lonicera</i>. The ground flora is also of variable cover, characterized by <i>Carex eburnea, Carex backii, Carex platyphylla, Carex rosea, Trillium grandiflorum, Geranium robertianum, Aquilegia canadensis, Solidago caesia, Cypripedium arietinum, Waldsteinia fragarioides</i>, and ferns, such as <i>Polypodium virginianum, Dryopteris intermedia</i>, and <i>Cystopteris bulbifera</i>. Several additional species are found occasionally in this community, including <i>Adlumia fungosa, Asclepias quadrifolia, Quercus muehlenbergii</i>, and <i>Asplenium rhizophyllum</i>. In Ontario, <i>Pterospora andromedea, Carex richardsonii</i>, and <i>Astragalus neglectus</i> may occur.
