Name: Achnatherum hymenoides - Oenothera deltoides Dune Grassland
Reference: NatureServe Biotics 2019
Description: This association is currently described only from the Mojave Desert Network. Additional global information will be added as it becomes available. It is found uncommonly in Death Valley National Park, Lake Mead National Recreation Area, and Mojave National Preserve in California, sampled and observed at mid elevations along sand dunes, sandsheets, and edges of playas such as within the Eureka Dunes. Elevation ranges from approximately 914 to 930 m, and averages 921 m. Slopes are gentle (1°). It is sampled on northerly aspects. Soils include fine to medium sand and are derived from eolian sand deposits and alluvium. Vegetation forms an open to intermittent herb layer in which the herbaceous cover ranges from 2 to 34%. The emergent tree layer is typically absent, and the shrub layer is sparse and ranges from 0 to 2% cover. Achnatherum hymenoides is characteristically present with other herbs such as Sphaeralcea ambigua, Oenothera deltoides, and/or Salsola tragus. The Salsola, which is an invasive non-native herb that occurs in various habitats across the West, is sometimes higher in cover than the native herbs. Shrubs that are sometimes present include Psorothamnus spp.
