Description:
Vegetation of this alliance is characterized by a sparse to moderately dense herbaceous layer of graminoids, the most of common of which include <i>Achnatherum hymenoides, Muhlenbergia pungens</i>, and <i>Pseudoroegneria spicata</i>. Other common graminoid associates may include <i>Hesperostipa comata, Koeleria macrantha, Leucopoa kingii, Pascopyrum smithii, Pleuraphis jamesii, Poa fendleriana, Poa secunda, Redfieldia flexuosa</i>, and <i>Schizachyrium scoparium</i>. Scattered shrubs may be found throughout stands. Forbs are rarely important, although cushion plants may be a prominent feature in some stands. These grasslands occur throughout the southern and middle Rocky Mountains and Colorado Plateau, into adjacent ecoregions. Habitats are variable and may include sand dunes and deposits, shale barrens, rocky or badland slopes, foothills, mesas, ridgetops, plateaus and saddles. Sites are flat to gently sloping between 1220 and 2700 m elevation.
