Description:
This alliance includes woodland communities occurring on acidic, talus slopes or rocky slopes of higher elevations (e.g., from 300-800 m [1000-2620 feet] in New England and to 1370 m [4500 feet] in West Virginia). <i>Quercus rubra</i> is sometimes dominant but usually occurs in association with <i>Acer rubrum, Betula lenta, Quercus alba, Quercus montana</i>, and others. Canopies are often stunted. The shrub layer may include, in the northern part of the range, <i>Acer spicatum, Hamamelis virginiana, Kalmia latifolia, Rhus typhina</i>, and <i>Sambucus racemosa var. racemosa</i>, while in the southern part of the range, <i>Gaylussacia ursina, Eubotrys recurva, Menziesia pilosa, Rhododendron arborescens, Rhododendron calendulaceum, Rhododendron catawbiense, Rhododendron maximum, Vaccinium simulatum</i>, and <i>Viburnum nudum var. cassinoides</i> are more typical. Herbs include <i>Aralia nudicaulis, Carex pensylvanica, Corydalis sempervirens, Deschampsia flexuosa, Maianthemum canadense, Oclemena acuminata, Polypodium virginianum</i>, and <i>Pteridium aquilinum var. latiusculum</i>. This vegetation is known from the Appalachian Mountains, from New York and New England, south to the Blue Ridge of North Carolina. Soils are shallow and acidic.
