Diagnostic species are Bursera microphylla, Jatropha cuneata, Pachycereus pecten-aboriginum, Pachycereus pringlei, Pachycereus schottii, and Stenocereus thurberi. Understory herbaceous species are usually sparse or absent. These sites often have areas with large rock outcrops or unstable slopes and may have few shrubs growing on them.
