Description:
This alliance, reported from the Black Hills in South Dakota, contains montane grasslands. These moist meadows have a rich diversity of dominants, including ~Hierochloe odorata, Achnatherum richardsonii (= Stipa richardsonii), Oryzopsis asperifolia, Phleum pratense, Agrostis hyemalis, Danthonia intermedia, Poa compressa, Poa fendleriana, Poa nemoralis ssp. interior (= Poa interior), Poa pratensis, Bromus marginatus, Bromus anomalus, Elymus repens (= Elytrigia repens), Leymus innovatus, Carex microptera, Carex hoodii$, and ~Carex tenera$. A wide diversity of showy forbs were also present, including ~Iris missouriensis, Delphinium bicolor, Astragalus alpinus, Lupinus sericeus, Dodecatheon meadia, Balsamorhiza sagittata$, and others. ~Sporobolus heterolepis, Achnatherum richardsonii, Hesperostipa spartea (= Stipa spartea), Hesperostipa curtiseta (= Stipa curtiseta)$, and ~Nassella viridula$ may have been more common in the well-drained portions of these meadows. Further study is needed to characterize this alliance. ^Stands have been reported from the Limestone Plateau region of the Black Hills, which receives an annual rainfall of 50-60 cm of rain a year. The region is generally at elevations of 6500-7000 feet; thus, snow remains in the mountain meadows late into spring.
