Description: This plant association is found in the Columbia Basin primarily within the Palouse grassland zone. Stands are present on slopes of all aspects. A nearly complete cover of woody species characterizes stands. Crataegus douglasii forms dense thickets over shrub understories dominated by Symphoricarpos albus, Rosa woodsii, Rosa nutkana, and Spiraea betulifolia. A number of herbaceous species may be present including Achillea millefolium, Besseya rubra, Galium boreale, Geranium viscosissimum, Iris missouriensis, Lithophragma parviflorum, Potentilla arguta, and Potentilla gracilis. A few locations have a somewhat short-lived tree layer of Populus tremuloides.
